Boomsatsuma

Bristol’s Boomsatsuma is where the next generation of creative professionals are trained. From college courses to degree programmes, they offer educational courses in film, photography, game design, and digital media.

They reached out to me needing a complete overhaul of their website and brand, which reflects their alternative approach to education, so we stepped in to deliver. As someone working in the creative industries, it is so pleasing to see and independent education provider giving an alternative to the usual college and degree options to young people.

The Challenge

Boomsatsuma had outgrown their brand and website and needed a new identity, with clarity, but also keeping in touch with that all-important brand icon – the satsuma 🍊.

They needed a new brand and WordPress website that would serve multiple audiences and purposes:

– Attract prospective students to apply for their college and degree courses
– Showcase the quality of their facilities and industry connections
– Present information clearly for students, parents, and employers
– Demonstrate their partnerships with major players like BBC, Aardman Animations, and The Bottle Yard Studios
– Create a platform that reflected their modern, alternative approach to creative education

The Solution

Working alongside AD Styles on the branding and design, we created a comprehensive physical and digital presence for Boomsatsuma.

AD developed a bold, unique brand identity and website design that captures the energy and professionalism of the institution. The visual identity needed to appeal to young creative students while also conveying credibility to parents, educators, and industry partners.

I built a custom WordPress website from scratch to bring this design to life. The site architecture was carefully structured to handle the complex navigation required for multiple course levels (college and degree), different subject areas (film, photography, games, sports media), and various information needs (student welfare, open days, term dates, industry partnerships).

The website features detailed course pages, student testimonials, industry partner showcases, and easy-to-find information about student life and support. The WordPress custom build ensures the site is fully responsive and provides an excellent user experience across all devices.

We built some custom animations which aren’t totally obvious from the outset, so they provide a nice surprise to the user when they find them.

Also, the custom nature of the site means we can build upon the site in the future, keeping long-term costs down.

The Result

Boomsatsuma now has a professional, polished website that positions them as a leading creative education provider in the South West. The site show them as unique disruptors in the education space – being creators, makers and innovators – while making it easy for prospective students to explore their options and take the next step.

The website serves as a hub for Boomsatsuma’s community, showcasing student work, celebrating achievements, and demonstrating the quality of education and industry connections that make them stand out in Bristol’s creative education landscape. It’s one I am particularly proud to be a part of.

The build also features a custom mega menu which organises the various areas of the site neatly, but also has some really pleasing design features.

And, last but not least, there is a custom animation at the bottom of the footer which AD built. The animation responds playfully to mouse hover and click to reveal some lovely surprises. Go check it out and give it a go.
